A 7.5 km long nature path makes you discover the beauty of the protected biotope and of Lake Caldaro
Along the Caldaro Nature Experience Trail, nature lovers and people interested in environment and cultural history can experience the lake and its beautiful surroundings by foot. The 7.5 km long circular path (3 hours walking time) leads past the protected area of the biotope with its small observation tower for bird watching and around the whole lake. It shows the fascination of the sub-Mediterranean shrubland and of the dry grassland on the eastern lakeside, as well as the beauty of the vineyards and of the hedgerow country on the western shore.
14 information panels provide interesting facts: did you know, for instance, that the lake was formed during the last ice age about 12,000 years ago or that it was already mentioned in the 10th century as “Lacus Caldari” in the so-called St. Vigilius Letter? A variant of the Caldaro Nature Experience Trail is the 6 km long Termeno Nature Experience Trail (2 hours walking time), which leads from the Piazza Municipio square in Termeno to Lake Caldaro and offers beautiful views on the lake. Arrived there, you can extend the walk by rounding the lake.
The Italian environment association Legambiente declared Lake Caldaro - just as the nearby Monticolo Lakes in Appiano - to be one of the clearest lakes in Italy, and awarded it the highest rating “5 Vele” (5 sails). By the way: also two legends tell about the lake and its origins!
