On the hill above Caldaro, in the place where the majestic Castelchiaro ruin rises, wild peas are growing. A legend tells why: once Notburga of Rattenberg, a saint who is believed to be responsible for many miracles, was in the service of the Lords of Rottenburg. This noble dynasty was also in possession of the Castelchiaro fortress, located high above the beautiful Lake Caldaro.
Saint Notburga, a pious maid, went daily down into the valley to bring food and drink to the poor - with the permission of her masters, she handed out the leftovers of the meals to people in need. Because she once lost several peas on her way, they have since grown as wild peas on the path uphill to the castle on which she walked.
