Campi al Lago (Klughammer, in German) seems to be part of San Giuseppe al Lago, but in fact it is not only an own locality, but belongs even to another municipality, Vadena. The Monte di Mezzo mountain separates the village of Vadena from the area of Lake Caldaro. At its height, the Passo di Novale al Varco saddle, there are the ruins of Castel Varco and - on another hill - the ones of Castelchiaro, the emblem of the lake.
The Castelchiaro fortress dates back to the time around 1200 AD. Its ruins were consolidated in the 20th century and represent today a popular excursion destination with a stunning view on the whole area of Lake Caldaro. Also Castel Varco has an interesting story to tell - its consolidated ruins are a well-known destination for hikers and cyclists alike.
The locality of Campi al Lago has no own church or shops, but it features a quiet and peaceful location with a view on the lake that has no equal. Not far, at the southern shores, there is the protected area of the Lake Caldaro Biotope with its reed belt and the Nature Experience Trail. Lovers of peace and quiet will feel at ease here!
