As the highest located district of Caldaro, the high plateau of Castelvecchio (Altenburg, in German) with its “Klotzbank” viewpoint, is perfectly suited as panoramic platform. The small locality at 612 m a.s.l. - approx. 6 km from the village centre of Caldaro - is located in the heart of the nature of the Oltradige area. Its history dates back to ancient times.
In the past a fortress was located in the village - today, however, Castelvecchio features two churches which can be visited. The medieval church dedicated to St. Vigilius, Bishop of Trento, dates back to the 15th century. The steeple was built in the 14th century. In the Rastenbach Gorge there is the second sacred building - the St. Peter’s Basilica, presumably the oldest church of the region. Here cup-marked stones dated to the Bronze Age (1000 BC) were found.
Visitors enjoying active holidays will feel at easy in the charming village of Castelvecchio. Beautiful hikes lead along the Peace Trail, into the Rastenbach Gorge and on the Caldaro High Route, or you can look forward to MTB tours and other outdoor activities, such as playing tennis in the sports grounds in the Castelvecchio Forest. In this area there’s also a well-known destination for families: the Caldaro Adventure Park with its high-rope course.
