The Peace Trail with its different stations leads from Caldaro village through the Castelvecchio Forest
Image gallery: Walk along the Peace Trail
A very particular walking path with starting point in Caldaro village leads through the woods and the landscape of the Oltradige area into the Rastenbach Gorge and reaches also the St. Peter's Basilica, presumably the oldest church of Tyrol: the well signposted Peace Trail (Friedensweg, in German). We start our hike at the Piazza dei Rottenburg square in the village centre, featuring a parking space as well as a bus stop. Here we see the first signposts for the Peace Trail to follow.
The trail was realised in the time period between 1995 and 2000, arising from the cooperation of the Assumption of Mary Parish, the Franciscan Monastery of Caldaro and the Market Town of Caldaro, who invited several Italian and foreign artists to create seven different models at seven points of meditation.
The models are inspired by the landscape and the virtues of temperance, prudence, justice, faith, hope, courage - exposed at the Rastenbach Gorge - and love - represented by the St. Peter's Basilica. Parts of this walking trail with its steps and bridges are also exciting for children! Arrived at the end of our hike, the Castelvecchio Viewpoint, we enjoy a stunning view on Lake Caldaro.
