There are many types of fish you may catch in the waters of Lake Caldaro: luce, perch, carp, tench, eel, bream and some more. Fishing is only allowed with fishing rod and fishhook (from 8 years on), you need to have the Italian fishing licence and the fishing card, in order to purchase the necessary allowance for fishing issued by the Caldaro Fishing Association.
In 2019 the Office for Hunting and Fishing of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano has ordered that only the use of dead sea fish is allowed as bait, furthermore the whole equipment has to be cleaned properly after fishing in the lake. The regulations regarding the maximum catch, the minimum measurements of the fish and the closed fishing seasons have to be respected. From the 1st of December to the 18th of March fishing is completely forbidden at Lake Caldaro, the minimum measurement for carps has been reduced recently from 70 cm to 65 cm. Also fishing in the reed belt at night-time and motorboats are not allowed.
The Caldaro Fishing Association (Fischereiverein Kaltern, in German), which every year organises the traditional fishermen meeting, is the contact point for fishermen at Lake Caldaro and provides information about the local fishing regulations.
