Quite a lot of exalted persons already stayed on the Passo della Mendola mountain pass: the Empress of Austria, Sisi, several ministers of the Republic, three popes (John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I) as well as Mahatma Gandhi. We walk to the place where already Archduke Franz Ferdinand watched down on the valley, accompanied by a very likeable local inhabitant. Our excursion starts with a ride in the Mendola Funicular, one of the steepest funicular railways of Europe - exciting!
